Ontario holiday weekend

Ontario’s first Governor General was Sir John Graves Simcoe, after whom the annual August holiday long weekend is named.

ntario celebrates Simcoe Day on the first weekend in August. Monday August 3 is a statutory holiday in Ontario. We will be enjoying the summer with friends and family. Our Upper Canada Immigration office is closed from Friday afternoon July 31 until Tuesday August 4.

The holiday is known by other names in different Canadian provinces and municipalities, including British Columbia Day in British Columbia; New Brunswick Day in New Brunswick; and Saskatchewan Day in Saskatchewan. The holiday is celebrated as Natal Day in Nova Scotia, to mark the founding of the Halifax–Dartmouth area, and Terry Fox Day in Manitoba, to honour a renowned Manitoba-born Canadian athlete, whose 1980 cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer has become a global phenomenon. Despite having a special designations in Nova Scotia and Manitoba, the day is not a statutory holiday in those provinces, nor in Prince Edward Island.
